NATIONWIDE — American employers added 162,000 jobs in August 2026, more than five times the average monthly gain of the prior year, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics revised June and July upward at the same time. The unemployment rate did not budge.

The headline was the strongest in months. But two industries, restaurants and local school districts, account for roughly 101,000 of the 162,000. Here is what actually moved, and what it means for what you type into a search box this week.

📊 What the Numbers Say

The Bureau of Labor Statistics published the August 2026 Employment Situation on Friday, September 4, 2026. Every payroll and unemployment figure below is seasonally adjusted and comes from that release. One distinction matters first: payrolls are counted through a survey of employers, the unemployment rate through a separate survey of households. They do not always tell the same story in the same month.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 162,000 in August, against an average monthly gain of 31,000 over the prior 12 months. The unemployment rate held at 4.1 percent, with 7.0 million people counted as unemployed and long-term unemployment little changed at 1.9 million. Labor force participation edged up to 61.6 percent, still down 0.5 percentage point since January. The number of people working part time because they could not get full-time work fell by 414,000 to 4.4 million, the largest single move in the household data.

Two revisions landed alongside it, both upward. June went from a gain of 20,000 to a gain of 31,000. July went from a loss of 23,000 to a gain of 21,000, turning a reported month of losses into a month of gains. Revisions are routine, since every headline number is revised twice, but a combined 55,000-job upward revision changes the shape of the summer.

Which Sectors Moved

The gains were narrow. Every industry the BLS named in the August release, with its over-the-month change, seasonally adjusted:

Information was the only industry the release named as declining, and the drop split three ways: computing infrastructure, data processing and web hosting shed 8,000; publishing lost 7,000; broadcasting and content lost 5,000.

The line most job seekers should read twice is the one about everything else. The BLS reported little change in every other major industry it tracks, naming wholesale and retail trade, transportation and warehousing, financial activities, professional and business services, social assistance, mining and other services. A strong headline is not the same as a broad one.

💵 What It Pays

Average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose 10 cents in August, or 0.3 percent, to $37.75, and 3.1 percent over the 12 months through August 2026. The average workweek edged up 0.1 hour to 34.4 hours.

Two caveats on that $37.75. It averages every private-sector job in the country, from warehouse floors to law offices, so it is no target for any particular role. And it is nominal: the release does not adjust for inflation. A direction of travel, not a benchmark.

⚠️ What the Headline Number Hides

Food services and local government education added 101,000 jobs between them, roughly 62 percent of the month's total. Both come with an asterisk.

The BLS noted that local government education's 42,000-job gain largely offset a decrease the month before. School district hiring is heavily seasonal, and adjusting for it around the start of an academic year is difficult. A swing down followed by a swing up is often timing, not demand.

Food services is a real gain and the largest in the release. It also skews toward part-time, tipped and high-turnover work, which makes it a fast door into a paycheck and a slower one into a career.

The hiring side of the market stayed quiet. In the most recent Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, covering July 2026 and released September 1, 2026, the BLS put openings at 7.3 million, hires at 5.1 million, quits at 3.1 million and layoffs and discharges at 1.7 million, all seasonally adjusted and all little changed. Low quits alongside low layoffs describes a market where not much moves in either direction: harder to get hired into, but not shedding people quickly either. Those 7.3 million openings sat against 6.9 million unemployed people in July. The two come from different BLS surveys, so read that as a rough gauge of competition, not a precise ratio.

The practical read is narrow but clear. Restaurants, school districts, hospitals and factory floors are where employers added headcount in August. Information is where they cut. Everything else was roughly flat. Aim first at what moved, and treat a search in a flat industry as a longer campaign rather than a bad week.
