π₯ What They Announced
Jackson Hewitt announced on October 20 that it plans to hire 15,000 new employees nationwide for the 2026–2027 tax season. The company is holding a weeklong National Hiring Week that began October 26. According to its release, the hiring events are open to the public, may include on-site interviews, and some qualified candidates may get a job offer on the spot. Times and details vary by office, so call or visit your local Jackson Hewitt before you go.
H&R Block said on September 29 that it is bringing on new associates across its nationwide network of offices for the coming tax season. The company did not give a headcount. It said positions are filled on a rolling basis and urged people to apply early, because the most in-demand roles fill fast.
Neither company published pay ranges in its announcement.
πΌ The Roles
Tax preparers. The core job. You interview clients, gather their documents and prepare individual returns, working through filing status, dependents, income types and credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. H&R Block says it wants both seasoned and new tax pros. Jackson Hewitt routes new hires through its own training course first.
Client service and client support. The front desk of a tax office. H&R Block calls these client service professionals and describes them as the first point of contact for clients, the people who greet clients and answer their questions. This is the easiest way in if you have customer service or retail experience and no tax background.
Sales and customer service. Jackson Hewitt lists both alongside tax preparation in its announcement. Many of its offices sit inside Walmart stores, so expect retail-style foot traffic.
π Training: How New People Get In
You do not need an accounting degree for an entry tax preparer job. Both chains run their own courses.
- Jackson Hewitt starts new hires in its Fundamentals of Tax Preparation Course, which covers filing requirements, dependents, filing status, income types and tax credits. It is offered in person, virtually or online depending on location. The company says the cost varies by location and that finishing the course is not a guarantee of a job.
- H&R Block runs an Income Tax Course. Its terms say there is no tuition fee, though course materials may be required. The federal portion is 40 hours, with longer state versions in California, Maryland and Oregon. Enrolling is not an offer of employment, and the course is not open to people working for, or seeking work with, a competing tax preparation company.
The federal bar. Anyone who prepares federal returns for pay needs a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number from the IRS. The 2027 PTIN costs $18.75, and the IRS is processing applications now.
California adds more. Paid preparers who are not CPAs, enrolled agents or attorneys must register with the California Tax Education Council: a 60-hour qualifying course taken within the past 18 months, a $5,000 tax preparer bond, a PTIN and a live scan. New York requires anyone paid to prepare a substantial part of a state return to register with the Tax Department every year. Other states have their own rules, so check with your state tax agency before tax season starts.
π΅ What It Pays
Neither company announced a pay range, and pay is set office by office. Many Jackson Hewitt locations are run by independent franchisees, who are the actual employers and set their own pay and policies. As one example, a Jackson Hewitt posting for the Phoenix area, updated October 21, offers $17 to $18 an hour for a January to April 2027 tax preparer job. That is one office, not a national rate. Read the range on the posting you apply to, and ask in the interview whether pay changes with returns completed or certifications earned.
β οΈ Read This Before You Apply
- It's seasonal. The busiest stretch runs from January to the April filing deadline. Ask whether the office keeps anyone on after spring.
- Training is not a job offer. Both companies say so in writing.
- Your employer may be a franchisee. At a Jackson Hewitt franchise, the local owner sets schedules, pay and policies.
- Expect a busy schedule. The Phoenix-area posting lists a flexible schedule during tax season as a requirement, so ask about evening and weekend hours up front.
- Be wary of look-alike offers. Apply through the company's own careers page or a local office, not through a stranger who messages you about "remote tax work."
π§ How to Turn a Seasonal Tax Job Into More
A season at a tax desk is a credential you can build on. The IRS runs a voluntary Annual Filing Season Program: 18 hours of continuing education, including a six-hour federal tax law refresher with a test. Completing it puts you in the IRS public directory of preparers and gives you limited rights to represent the clients whose returns you prepared. From there, enrolled agent is the IRS's top credential. Ask in the interview whether the office pays for continuing education.
