Hotel Jobs: What They Pay and How to Get Hired

HOTEL & HOSPITALITY HIRING — Hotels run every hour of every day, which means they hire all year for the front desk, housekeeping, maintenance and banquets. Many of those jobs open with a high school diploma and a few weeks of training, and the path from the front desk to a manager's office does not require a degree.

Here is what hotel jobs pay in the U.S., which ones need no degree, and how front desk and housekeeping staff move up to supervisor and manager.

πŸ“Š How Big Hotel Hiring Is Right Now

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 1,916,500 jobs in the accommodation industry in September 2026, seasonally adjusted and still preliminary. That is essentially where it stood in June, at 1,916,100. In plain terms, hotel employment is holding steady rather than booming or shrinking.

A flat headcount does not mean hotels have stopped hiring. Front desk and housekeeping postings come up year round as people move on or move up. Holiday travel and convention calendars add short bursts on top, especially in destination cities.

πŸ’Ό The Jobs

Housekeepers. The biggest job in the building. BLS counted 420,800 maids and housekeeping cleaners working in the accommodation industry in 2025. You clean and reset guest rooms on a set room count per shift, restock supplies and report anything broken. It is physical work, on your feet with a cart, and the pace is set by checkout and check-in times.

Front desk agents. BLS calls them hotel, motel and resort desk clerks, and counted 264,600 of them across all industries in 2025, 247,700 of those inside the hotel industry itself. You check guests in and out, take payments, handle reservations and complaints, and are the person a guest calls at 2 a.m. A night auditor is a front desk agent on the overnight shift who also balances the day's transactions.

Food and beverage staff. Hotels employed 143,620 waiters and waitresses in 2025, plus cooks, bartenders and banquet crews. Banquet work rises and falls with weddings, conferences and holiday parties.

Maintenance and engineering. Hotel maintenance techs fix plumbing, HVAC, lighting and anything else a guest reports. It is a good fit for someone with general repair skills who wants steadier hours than construction.

Supervisors and managers. Housekeeping supervisors, front office managers and general managers run the shifts and the property. Hotels employed 40,380 housekeeping and janitorial supervisors and 38,100 lodging managers in 2025.

πŸ’΅ What Hotel Jobs Pay

These are median hourly wages for workers inside the accommodation industry, from BLS occupational estimates for 2025. A median is the midpoint: half the people in that job earned more, and half earned less.

Job (accommodation industry)Median hourly wage, 2025
Maids and housekeeping cleaners$16.78
Hotel, motel and resort desk clerks$16.82
Waiters and waitresses$17.06
Housekeeping and janitorial supervisors$21.94
Lodging managers$32.27

For context, the median for all occupations in the U.S. was $50,980 a year in May 2025. Across all industries, BLS puts the desk clerk median at $35,070 a year and the lodging manager median at $69,250 a year, or $33.29 an hour.

The jump to supervisor is where the money moves. A housekeeping supervisor's median runs about $5 an hour above a housekeeper's. Lodging managers span a wide range: the bottom tenth earned less than $40,070 and the top tenth more than $128,880 in May 2025, depending on the size of the property and the market.

Your city matters too. Hotel pay follows local wage floors and local demand, so a desk job in a high-cost resort or convention city can pay well above the same job in a small market. Compare postings in your own area before you settle on a number.

πŸŽ“ Training and Credentials

Front desk. BLS says information clerks, the group that includes hotel desk clerks, typically need a high school diploma and get short-term training on the job, usually a few weeks. You learn the property's reservation system on shift. Customer service, cash handling or a second language make your application stand out.

Housekeeping, maintenance and banquets. Hotels hire for reliability, stamina and attention to detail. Maintenance techs with HVAC or electrical experience have an edge, and some states license certain trade work, so check the posting.

Management. This is the part most people miss. BLS lists the typical entry for lodging managers as a high school diploma plus less than five years of experience in a related job. A bachelor's degree in hospitality or hotel management is preferred at many full-service hotels, and an associate's degree or certificate can qualify you at limited-service properties. But the door from the front desk to a manager's job is real. BLS also notes that professional certification may help.

πŸ”₯ Who's Hiring

The big brand families, Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Wyndham and Choice, post jobs property by property. Many hotels that carry a brand name are owned or run by a franchisee or a hotel management company, so the employer on your paycheck may not be the name on the sign. That is normal; search both the brand and the local management company.

Beyond branded hotels, look at casino resorts, independent boutique hotels, extended-stay properties, and resorts and RV parks in seasonal destinations.

⚠️ Who Hotel Work Is Not For

Hotels never close. BLS says desk clerks may work evenings, weekends and holidays, and lodging managers' schedules often include all three, with some on call around the clock. If you need a fixed Monday-to-Friday daytime schedule, hotel work will be a fight. Housekeeping is hard on the body. Part-time schedules are common at the desk, which is a plus for students and a minus if you need guaranteed 40 hours, so ask about hours before you accept.

πŸ”Ž Where to Aim Right Now

Search by title first, then by brand. Try "front desk agent" and "guest service agent," since hotels use both for the same job, and search "night auditor" if you want the overnight shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a degree to work at a hotel?

How much do hotel front desk agents make?

Desk clerks in the hotel industry had a median wage of $16.82 an hour in 2025, according to BLS. Pay varies a lot by city and by property.

How much do hotel housekeepers make?

Can you become a hotel manager without a degree?

Yes. BLS lists the typical entry for lodging managers as a high school diploma plus less than five years of experience in a related job, often at the front desk or in housekeeping. A degree helps at full-service hotels but is not the only route.

Do hotel jobs have set schedules?
